In May 1939, the MS St. Louis, a German ocean liner carrying 937 Jewish refugees, was turned away from the shores of the United States. This heartbreaking event is the subject of a new book, The Tragedy of the MS St. Louis: Stories of Our Past.

This meticulously researched and beautifully written book tells the stories of the passengers and crew of the MS St. Louis, and explores the larger historical context of the Holocaust.

The book begins with the rise of Nazi Germany and the persecution of Jews that led to the mass exodus of Jews from Europe. It then follows the MS St. Louis as it sails from Hamburg, Germany, to Cuba, where the passengers hoped to find refuge. However, the Cuban government refused to allow the passengers to disembark, and the ship was forced to turn away.

The MS St. Louis then sailed to the United States, but was again turned away. The ship was finally allowed to dock in Antwerp, Belgium, where the passengers were interned in a refugee camp. Many of the passengers were eventually deported to Nazi concentration camps, where they were killed.

The Tragedy of the MS St. Louis is a moving and important book that sheds light on a little-known chapter of the Holocaust. It is a story of hope and despair, of tragedy and resilience. It is a story that we must never forget.
