In 1839, Grant was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1843, and he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Grant served in the Mexican-American War, and he distinguished himself in battle. He was promoted to captain in 1847.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Grant was living in Galena, Illinois. He volunteered to serve in the Union Army, and he was soon promoted to brigadier general. Grant led the Union Army to victory in a series of battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Battle of Vicksburg.

In 1864, Grant was promoted to lieutenant general, and he was given command of all the Union armies. He led the Union Army to victory in the Battle of Appomattox Court House, which ended the Civil War. Grant was hailed as a hero, and he was elected President of the United States in 1868.

As President, Grant worked to rebuild the country after the Civil War. He also worked to protect the rights of African Americans. Grant's presidency was marked by a number of scandals, but he remained a popular figure. He left office in 1877, and he retired to New York City.
